I. THE COMMERCIAL IDEOLOGIES (Society Is Made From Voluntary Exchange Between Different Interests)


“A Libertarian” (Member of an organization) refers to a member of the Libertarian Party.

“Libertarian” (A belief,preference,or bias.) 1. refers to sentiment that is expressed as a value judgement which in any political question favors individual liberty, but where the sentiment cannot be articulated in analytical terms, and only articulated as metaphor or analogy. “John has libertarian tendencies.” “I’m libertarian, I’m just not *A* libertarian. Because A libertarian has a narrower concept of property rights than I do. And I’m not A Libertarian, with a capital L, because I’m not a member of the Libertarian Party.” 2. A collection of associations, affiliations and groups with different institutional preferences and philosophical justifications, all of which purport to possess the libertarian bias for individual liberty.

“Libertarianism” (A Rational Philosophy) is a philosophical framework which at the minimum, reduces all political questions to those of property rights and voluntary transfer, but which different factions also include the scope of property definitions, the limits of those rights, the cause of those rights, the justification of those rights as moral or utilitarian, the inclusion of warrantee, the necessity of symmetric ethics, the use of normative or procedural institutions. I study libertarianism so that I can understand my Libertarian feelings.

“libertarian” (small-l- libertarian) (A narrower rational philosophy) is the self-identifying label for the faction of Libertarianism that restricts all questions of politics to a the narrower criteria of several-property and voluntary exchange. (This term has become synonymous with anarchism.) I’m a libertarian, because I respect the inviolability of private property.

“Classical Liberalism” (An institutional system) is advocacy for a certain set of procedural institutions that assist in promoting libertarian value judgements: participatory republicanism, a division of powers, a hard constitution, and the rule of law, and restriction on the concentration of power. Classical Liberals are a subset of Libertarians. American conservatives think of government in classical liberal terms.

“Bleeding Heart Libertarianism (BHL)” (A Bias In Favor Of Redistribution While maintaining skepticism of the state) BHL is an *as yet unarticulated* sentiment that some sort of egalitarian allocation of resources is necessary, utilitarian, or desirable. I’m libertarian, but I agree with the Bleeding Heart Libertarians; we have to do something about social justice.

II. THE HIERARCHICAL IDEOLOGIES (Society Is Built Through Conformity To Norms Due To External Threats)


“Conservative Libertarian” Right libertarians, Libertarian conservatives, or “libertarian constitutionalists”. Revers to those that advocate limiting government by enforcing the United States Constitution. Thomas DiLorenzo criticized conservative libertarians, writing, “The fatal flaw in the thinking of the libertarian/conservative constitutionalists stems from their unawareness or willful ignorance of how the founders themselves believed the Constitution could be enforced: by the citizens of the free, independent, and sovereign states, not the federal judiciary.”

“Conservative” (A Normative Bias) refers to a value judgement which favors organic meritocratic change rather than intentional and planned legislative change, as a defense against the dangers of hubris and corruption. “I’m conservative on social issues.”

“Conservatism” (A Modified Classical Liberal Philosophy) refers to an articulated historic philosophy which favors the priority of procedural institutions over normative institutions, and specifically eschews inclusion of non-normative, non-property owners in the system of enfranchisement. (From Burke onward.) This sentiment is an artifact of european martial manorialism, and the constraint that system placed upon the breeding rates of the lower classes.

“Economic Conservative” (A Policy Bias) refers to a value judgement that favors organic meritocratic change through market activity in the service of consumers, and a relaxation of the normative economy to the extent that it does not affect the procedural institutions and the market economy.

“Social Conservative” (A Policy Bias) refers to a bias that favors the priority of normative institutions over procedural institutions.

III. THE COMMUNAL IDEOLOGIES (Society Is Built Through Consensus)


“Progressive” (A Policy Bias) Refers to a sentiment that is expressed as a value judgement that in any political question favors redistribution in pursuit of material equality, but where the sentiment cannot be expressed in rational terms.

“Democratic Socialist” (An Institutional Bias) refers to the collective ownership of all resources, and the lending of those resources to individuals for the purpose of producing collective ends, and income as the reward for service, and the amount of the award to be determined by representatives of the collective. (Democratic Socialist Secular Humanism.)

“Socialist” (A Philosophy) refers to the collective ownership of all resources and all means of production, and all human beings, and the organization of production, and allocation of rewards by representatives of the collective.

IV. PROPERTARIANISM


PROPERTARIANISM (A Methodology) (Complex Societies consist of institutions Becasue consensus is impossible and undesirable.)
“I am a conservative (limited govt, and limited enfranchisement) bleeding heart (redistributionist) Hoppeian (private government, and private bureaucracy) libertarian (preferring individual liberty) who uses propertarian (analysis of property constructs and their transfer) reasoning.” Meaning, I favor personal liberty, limited enfranchisement, some redistribution — as long as government limits itself to the coordination of infrastructure investment, the resolution of conflicts over property, and the protection of the market from fraud, by the use of procedural systems.

PROPERTARIANISM is an articulated set of arguments using an expanded concept of property, and which recommend different sets of procedural institutions that both allow us to explain and compare different political preferences as descriptions of property and transfers. It makes political strategies possible to articulate. In so it justifies bleeding heart libertarianism, and allow conservatives to articulate their political sentiments, which are expressions of the non-procedural normative economy, in rational propertarian terms. This ability to articulate ideas can improve general political discourse by making conservatism, which includes libertarianism, at least int he west, finally arguable in rational terms.

A PROPERTARIAN is unconcerned with the preference for any institutional combination, only which combination of institutions are possible and which outcomes they can and cannot produce.

(NOTE: The term “Libertarian” evolved out of Classical Liberalism when the term “Liberal” was successfully appropriated by the socialists, and Classical Liberals sought a new self identifying term that was less victim to appropriation. This term was then appropriated by the anarchist movement despite their narrowing of the scope of the properties of classical liberalism.)
